Lake Neusiedl is the westernmost steppe lake in Europe and the largest lake in Austria. It is 36km long and 14km wide and its surface area, including the reed belt, covers 320 km². Four-fifths of the lake lie in Austrian and the other 1/5 in Hungarian territory. The average water temperature between May and September is 17 degrees Celsius and can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer months.
The lake is shallow, with an average depth of 1.5m. This, together with excellent wind conditions and the mild Pannonian climate, makes Lake Neusiedl a paradise for water-lovers and relaxation-seekers. It is also the top sailing and windsurfing destination in Austria.
