Sparkling soda lakes, huge reed beds, secret swamps – the region of Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel is rich in fascinating wetland habitats. Dragonflies cavort with glittering wings, frogs hop around in the undergrowth of willows, birds glide through the whispering reeds – a world waiting to be discovered.

Excursions through the national park offer visitors a glimpse of the special features of the nature in the Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel area. 

The Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel National Park was established in 1993. Seven municipalities are included within the park area. The Fertö-Hanság Nemzeti Park lies on the Hungarian side and was established in 1991. The protected area now encompasses 300km² and is not only the first trans-boundary national park in Austria but also the first to be internationally recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. 

The national park area is divided into six areas: Apetlon - Lange Lacke, Illmitz-Hölle, Podersdorf - Karmazik, Sandeck-Neudegg, Waasen-Hanság and the Zitzmannsdorfer Wiesen.
