Welcome to hell

The preservation zone Illmitz - hell

Hell is located on the B10 (Neusiedler See Radweg) & B20 (Lackenradweg).

This sub-area of around 3,000 hectares includes a number of salt marshes, meadow areas, the lake foreshore and the reed belt with small banks. In the grazed shore area south of Podersdorf, the wader breeds alongside hundreds of gray geese.

Migrating limousines can be easily observed here at the Stinker Lakes and in the wet meadows. Extensive fields of soda snow with corresponding salt vegetation can be seen on the drying shores of the Lacken. Common Terns are regularly seen at the Lower Stinker Lake, and Avocets and Kentish Plover breed at the Zicklacke. The South Russian tarantula lives in the vegetation-poor shore area. The marginal areas of the Zicklacke and the Kirchsee are grazed by cattle to keep the breeding grounds open.
